Sacramento authorities are probing a violent incident that broke out Saturday night April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the time law enforcement were dispersing an unlawful assembly of hundreds of attendees.
How It Started
Law enforcement were first dispatched to the park on Howe Avenue at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after unauthorized gathering shooting Sacramento receiving reports of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Following that, additional information came in concerning a potential altercation happening at the location.
A law enforcement helicopter flew over the park but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Even so, deputies found that a crowd of several hundred had congregated at Howe Park without official sanction.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Officers moved to clear the area by surrounding the park and making announcements commanding the assembled crowd to vacate the area. Approximately 15 minutes were allowed for individuals to vacate.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that upwards of 20 gunshots were discharged. The barrage of gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies swiftly started looking for those injured.
Four People Shot
By the time the scene was secured, four shooting victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. The victims — made up of one woman and three men each reported to be in their twenties — were rushed to Sacramento area hospitals. Medical teams noted that two had critical injury classifications, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one person's injuries were considered minor. Thankfully, all four were in stable condition.
Sacramento Metro Fire assisted at the location and provided medical assistance the four victims on location.
The Investigation
The primary shooting scene was believed to have been concentrated near the Cottage Way corridor adjacent to the local Home Depot on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Investigators identified more spent casings on Cottage Way. Bullet damage were discovered in the metal fencing alongside the Home Depot. The physical evidence confirmed that a second shooter had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area targeting the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was placed on lockdown during the incident. CSI investigators and detectives worked tirelessly well into the night.
Detainees in Solano County
Details gathered via scanner audio established that a vehicle identified as a Kia had been stopped in an area within Solano County. Four people were detained. Sacramento law enforcement were heading to pick up the four detainees to bring the suspects back for questioning. Footage analyzed by investigators made clear that two shooters had been involved.
